In the mid-1990s, the company Human Genome Sciences submitted three potentially revolutionary patent applications to the US Patent and Trademark Office, each of which claimed the entire genome sequence of a microorganism. The patent examiners, however, objected to these applications, and after negotiation they were eventually re-written to resemble more traditional gene patents. In this paper, which is based on a study of the patent examination files, we examine the reasons why these patent applications were unsuccessful in their original form. (...) We show that with respect to utility and novelty, the patent attorney’s case built on an understanding of the genome as a computer-related invention. The patent examiners did not object to the patenting of complete genome sequences as computer-related inventions on moral grounds or in terms of the distinction between a discovery and an invention. Instead, their objections were based on classification, rules and procedure. Rather than patent examiners having a notion of a genome that should not be patented, the notion of a ‘genome’, and the ways in which it may be different from a ‘gene’, played no role in these debates. We discuss the consequences of our findings for patenting in the biosciences. (shrink)

The main purpose of this research is to comparatively examine the attitude levels of students studying in Anatolian Imam Hatip High Schools and other types of high schools towards the meaning of life. The sample of the study is 975 students selected by random sampling method, studying at the 12th grade of Anatolian Imam Hatip High Schools and other types of high schools in Erzurum in the 2022-2023 academic year. The research was designed according to the survey model, which is (...) one of the quantitative research methods. The data of the study were collected with the personal information form and the Meaning and Purpose of Life Scale. SPSS-26 program was used in the analysis of the collected data. According to the research findings, it was seen that the students' level of attitude towards the meaning of life, and the average taken from the Meaning and Purpose of Life sub-dimension of the scale were high. In addition, it was determined that the average taken from the Meaninglessness of Life and Lack of Purpose sub-dimension was moderate. These averages were very close to each other between Anatolian Imam Hatip High Schools and other high school students. When the obtained scores were examined, it was seen that there was no significant difference between the students' attitudes towards the meaning of life according to gender, age levels and school type (p>0.05). When the socioeconomic status of the students, their place of residence during the school period, their academic achievement levels and their level of orientation towards spirituality were examined, it was observed that there was a significant difference (p. This essay explores the role of informal logicand its application in the context of currentdebates regarding evidence-based medicine. This aim is achieved through a discussion ofthe goals and objectives of evidence-basedmedicine and a review of the criticisms raisedagainst evidence-based medicine. Thecontributions to informal logic by StephenToulmin and Douglas Walton are explicated andtheir relevance for evidence-based medicine isdiscussed in relation to a common clinicalscenario: hypertension management. This essayconcludes with a discussion on the relationshipbetween clinical reasoning, rationality, andevidence. Current knowledge about the variety and complexity of the processes that allow regulated gene expression in living organisms calls for a new understanding of genes. A ‘postgenomic’ understanding of genes as entities constituted during genome expression is outlined and illustrated with specific examples that formed part of a survey research instrument developed by two of the authors for an ongoing empirical study of conceptual change in contemporary biology.

This paper examines whether corporate environmental responsibility is influenced by regional differences in climate change denial. While there is an overwhelming consensus among scientists that climate change is happening, recent surveys still indicate widespread climate change denial across societies. Given that corporate activity causing climate change is fundamentally rooted in individual beliefs and societal institutions, we examine whether local perceptions about climate change matter for firms’ engagement in environmental responsibility. We use climate change perception surveys conducted in the U.S. to (...) compute a novel measure of climate change denial for each U.S. county. We find that firms located in counties with higher levels of climate change denial have weaker environmental performance ratings, are more likely to commit environmental violations, and impose greater environmental costs on society. Regional differences in religiosity, social capital, political leaning, or county-level demographic characteristics cannot explain these results. Furthermore, we document that strong corporate governance mechanisms and corporate culture moderate the negative relationship between climate change denial and corporate environmental responsibility. Overall, our findings offer new insights into how local beliefs and perceptions about climate change may influence firm-level sustainability practices. (shrink)
